The Vatican City is actually the world's smallest independent sovereign state, established by the Lateran Treaties in 1929. It covers an area of just 108 acres / 43 hectares, situated entirely within the city of Rome, sprawling over a hill west of the River Tiber, and separated from the rest of the city by a wall. The Vatican City is famous for its magnificent St Peter’s Basilica, the Pope’s residence, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museum, which contains the major works of art and valuable pictures.
